Most people will say Googling yourself is a pretentious practice. But Googling yourself is practical. Especially if you’re applying for jobs, networking, or generally just trying to broaden your professional profile. It’s not just about finding negative things about yourself and cleaning it up like a personal online cleaning service.

If you don’t see what comes up in a Google search of your own name, you’re missing a trick. Follow this guideline to improve your job prospects, online presence, and overall reputation.

Preparing for a Job Search with a Web Search

Managing your online reputation has never been more important. Individuals attempting to advance their career, do so with careful planning. For example, resumes and cover letters crafted with specific industries, companies, and audiences in mind. Each document is meticulously edited to make sure that they are positioning themselves for success.

job-search | How To Manage Your Online Reputation Before Your Next Job Interview

People become one-man marketing teams when it’s time to apply for a new job. They update their LinkedIn profiles with the latest information, polish online portfolios, and upload recent headshots. People spend a ton of time applying for jobs. Before we get to work on our resumes and cover letters, we clean up our professional online profiles.

Let that sink in. The first action job seekers take when they are preparing to apply for a new job — before updating their resumé or writing a cover letter —  is updating their professional profiles online. Whether job seekers are applying for jobs through LinkedIn, Indeed, Monster or all three, they know that the first click will be on their profile, not on their attachments.

One Click Further: Managing Your Online Reputation

If the first click is on your profile, what is the second click that HR managers and recruiters make after receiving an online application? Hint: it’s not on the ‘download’ button to save those perfectly formatted word documents.

reputation-management | How To Manage Your Online Reputation Before Your Next Job Interview

Almost 80 percent of all job recruiters are required to look potential employees up online during the hiring process.

The second click that HR managers and recruiters make, without a doubt, is the ‘search’ button after they’ve copied and pasted your name into Google’s search engine.

Google Yourself for Job Hunting, Networking, and Your Personal Life

It isn’t a surprise that HR departments run Google searches on prospective candidates. Why would it be? People run Google searches on people they meet constantly. Consider attending a conference or networking event: everyone leaves with a pocket full of business cards (yes, they still make those).

When those people go back to their desk and flip through a new stack of business cards they are more likely to run a search for the name of the person listed on the business card than they are to type in the web address.

job-interview | How To Manage Your Online Reputation Before Your Next Job Interview

The name of the person will be displayed prominently at the top of the card. The website, be it a company or personal website, is typically listed in smaller print at the bottom of the card. Thus, the name gets searched first. The search might yield a professional bio on a corporate website, a LinkedIn account, or an image from 2003 of the person doing a keg stand in college.

Does the image say it’s from 2003? No. For all people know, the picture could be from last weekend. This same principle applies to dating and even making new friends. People like to Google new people they meet because they want to get a “behind the scenes” peek at private lives. In reality, what they are seeing is a small part of the most public version of person’s life — often from a past that doesn’t reflect the person’s present.

Google yourself to determine your online reputation:

  • In the search engine, type your name in quotes. For example: “John Smith”
  • Review the first two pages of results
  • Carefully review all the image results
  • Repeat on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest — any social media site. Pay attention to apps or groups that may be public.

Do you like what you see? Did you find posts on Facebook that you were tagged in that are public? Public images you thought were private? Websites you’ve never heard of listing your name and pictures of you on a profile? You’re not alone.

When they searched themselves, 20 percent found inaccurate information, 33 percent found their content had been shared without their permission, and 12 percent said they were “unpleasantly surprised” at what they had found.

How to Manage Your Online Reputation

Do not feel helpless or embarrassed. If you are one of the people who was “unpleasantly surprised” by what they read or saw after a Google search, there is a lot you can do to remove the information.

online-reputation-management | How To Manage Your Online Reputation Before Your Next Job Interview

However, it will take time and effort on your part. Steps you can take to regain control of your online reputation:

  • Remove content yourself. It will be time-consuming, but you can clean up most social media posts and images by untagging yourself, deleting them, or making them private.
  • Ask to remove the content. Contact the websites or people posting the information or images and ask to have them removed. URLs for both the pages and the images. Follow up on the progress of your request to make sure that it is completed.
  • Ask Google to remove content. If unflattering images from old social media profiles are still appearing in Google searches, click on the “visit page” button. If you receive a 404 / Not Found error message, fill out this form and ask Google to remove it.
  • Override bad content with good content. If you haven’t already done so, set up a personal website and make the URL your name. Maintain a blog, even if you’re posting once a month, or copy and paste your resumé and link to your social media accounts. Sign up for a LinkedIn profile, Google+, or another other public profile that you can carefully curate. These profiles will appear in search first. Contributing articles to professional publications is another way to push the negative content down in search rankings.

There are a number of ways you can remove negative information from the internet, but if managing your online reputation sounds exhausting and stressful, or you feel the situation has gotten out of hand, it’s best to contact professionals to have your online reputation properly scrubbed, monitored, and maintained.

4. SpyFu

If your focus is organising and improving your SEO and PPC campaigns whilst conducting in-depth keyword research, SpyFu is a great contender. SpyFu allows you to search for competitor domains and see where they’ve shown up on Google.

SpyFu allows you to analyse what keywords your competitors have bought on Adwords as well as organic ranks, and ad variations. And whilst this might sound familiar to SEM Rush, the pricing of Spyfu is over half price in comparison.

5. Moz Pro

You’ve more than likely heard about Moz at some stage. There’s a lot about SEO that they wrote the book on and in particular, Rand Fishkin’s Whiteboard Friday’s have become epic over the years. Moz’s SEO toolset provides keyword research, site audits, link building and page optimisations in one tool that can be a very powerful software set to use.

moz-pro | The 11 Best SEO Competitive Analysis Tools For 2017

There’s little to say against Moz Pro, considering the functionality it gives. Start-ups may find the number of features a bit daunting, but its user-friendly interface quickly overcomes this.

6. Searchmetrics

Searchmetrics have been around since 2005, and are a well-known brand in the SEO game. Their product, Searchmetrics Suite, is a great tool for content optimisation, SEO, Competitive Research and on page optimisation with site architecture.

9. SEO Profiler

Not as pretty as some of the mentions at the top of this list. But SEO Profiler packs a punch when it comes to the level of data they provide. While you can sign up for free to get access to some limited data, there’s also an option to try everything out for $1 for a month.

10. Scrapebox

While Scrapebox may initially look like something from the early 90’s, don’t underestimate the power under the hood. Yes, the design is lacklustre and raw, but it gives incredible insights into not only your own site but in particular that of your competitors.

scrapebox | The 11 Best SEO Competitive Analysis Tools For 2017

Originally built with blackhat SEO techniques in mind, Scrapebox has become a great tool when it comes to link building. If you’re an eCommerce site, this is a tool that will pay you back in spades when it comes to analysing your competitor’s sites.

WordPress powers over a quarter of the internet. Really. More than 1 in 4 websites on the web are built on it.

When it comes to search engine optimisation (SEO), WordPress is one of the best platforms. So if you’re thinking about building a website with SEO in mind from the start, you probably want to go with WordPress. But that doesn’t mean it will be easy. Beginners are especially prone to making mistakes when doing on-page optimisation on a WordPress site. That being said, these mistakes are made by advanced SEOs as well. So here are the top 10 WordPress SEO mistakes that beginners make and how to avoid them so that you get more visibility in the SERPs.

race | Top 10 WordPress SEO Mistakes That Beginners Make

1. You Don’t Set Your Time Zone

Whenever you have a new WordPress website, one of the most overlooked options is selecting your time zone under Settings > General.

If you ever set your site to schedule posts to publish at a certain time, you’ll have a rude awakening when you find your article wasn’t published at the right time. If you don’t set your time zone correctly, this might happen to you, so be sure to make this adjustment to ensure your blog is producing timely content.

wordpress-time-zone | Top 10 WordPress SEO Mistakes That Beginners Make

2. You Don’t Set Goals in Google Analytics

Measuring your results is how you tell whether your SEO was successful or a failure. You could increase organic traffic to 10 million page views a month, but if those visitors don’t buy your products, invest in your service, or perform actions that make you money, you’re going to be in trouble.

Whenever anybody performs an action that leads to revenue, like joining an email list or becoming a customer, redirect them to a congratulations page (yourwebsite.com/congratulations). You can then use Google Analytics goals to measure how many people landed on those pages as well as how many of those visitors came from organic search.

newsletter-goal | Top 10 WordPress SEO Mistakes That Beginners Make

Now you have a way to measure the conversion of your organic traffic. That means you can make the changes necessary to improve your bottom line.

organic-conversions | Top 10 WordPress SEO Mistakes That Beginners Make

3. You Don’t Add Open Graph Social Meta Data

Although social signals don’t have a big impact on ranking, there’s no debate that social media can help bring people to your website. So you want as many people to click on your content as possible.

That means making your content look its best when it’s shared on social networks. So you need to make sure you have open graph data activated for Facebook and Twitter Cards activated for Twitter.

The Yoast SEO plugin can do all of this for you with the click of a couple buttons.

To enable open graph data for Facebook, simply Enable it in the Yoast settings.

facebook-yoast | Top 10 WordPress SEO Mistakes That Beginners Make

Then you can tell Facebook which image to draw from when the article is shared there.

open-graph | Top 10 WordPress SEO Mistakes That Beginners Make

You can also activate Twitter cards in the Yoast settings.

yoast twitter | Top 10 WordPress SEO Mistakes That Beginners Make

With this activated, when people tweet links on your website, they’ll appear with a full preview like seen below.

4. You Didn’t Create and Submit Your XML Sitemap

An XML sitemap is pretty much a big list of every post, page, and piece of media on your website. It’s what you submit to Google through the Search Console to tell them everything on your site you want to be indexed.

You can create your sitemap using the Yoast SEO plugin as well, under SEO > XML Sitemaps. Just make sure you’ve enabled it, and you can view your sitemap using the link below.

xml-sitemap | Top 10 WordPress SEO Mistakes That Beginners Make

Lastly, you’ll want to submit this sitemap to Google Search Console.

5. You Didn’t Set Permalinks to Post Name

Google loves to give people content that’s user-friendly. That means even your permalinks are going to play a small part in how your pages rank (and in their click-through rate).

Under Settings > Permalinks, always be sure to select an option where the permalink will include some of the keywords included in the post (usually in the H1 tag). The easiest way to do this is to simply select Post name and call it a day.

Including the day or month in your permalinks may be important to how Google views your website, so you may want to consider using Day and name or Month and name if that’s the case.

permalinks | Top 10 WordPress SEO Mistakes That Beginners Make

6. You Didn’t Link to Your Homepage From Your Footer

This is an easy one. It’s surprising that so many people forget this!

Everybody has the name of their website or business in their footer, so why not link it to your homepage from this anchor text! This will help with your internal linking strategy as well as help Google recognize your site through branded anchor text.

Doing this won’t cause your site to skyrocket in the rankings, but it’s definitely a best practice.

7. You Don’t Publish Content Regularly

Publishing more content gives people a reason to regularly visit your site. This also will help you rank for more keywords, which means more opportunities to gain visibility in Google’s organic search results and attract more clicks and traffic.

Google wants to reward sites that publish great content that satisfies users. If you aren’t publishing content regularly, then fewer people will visit your site and Google will crawl your site less often.

8. You Don’t Update Content Regularly

When people find your content via search but discover it’s outdated after clicking through, they will immediately hit the back button and look for another site that answers their question or helps them achieve their goal. Google will notice this and could de-value that piece of content if it doesn’t appear to be providing value to searchers.

That’s why it’s important to regularly review the old content on your site and make sure it’s up-to-date. Ensure that the content is relevant to people today and that you care enough about visitors to update your content. (You can check for these types of pages by checking your analytics for pages with low time on site and high bounce rates.)

9. You Don’t Check for Broken Links

Google likes a clean website. That means you’ll want all your links to stay updated and avoid pointing visitors towards any pages that are showing 400 or 500 errors.

To automate this process, simply install Broken Link Checker. You’ll receive emails when links are broken and you can go in and fix them in real-time.

broken-links | Top 10 WordPress SEO Mistakes That Beginners Make

10. You Don’t Implement Simple Schema Markup

The majority of websites don’t use schema markup at all to influence how their pages show up in search results.

While this doesn’t negatively affect rankings, it may have a huge influence on your click-through rate in Google search.

Even implementing simple star rating schema markup to show Google searchers how your website’s visitors like your content could entice people to click on your result instead of a competitor’s who ranks better than you because of the 5-star rating.

schema-markup | Top 10 WordPress SEO Mistakes That Beginners Make

Summary

If you want to build a website and grow traffic using SEO, WordPress is a great way to go! Just make sure you avoid these common pitfalls and stick to best practices. If you can do those two things, you’ll start to see positive results soon.

If your website isn’t ranking as well as you’d like, check that you aren’t making any of these common WordPress SEO mistakes. A thorough review should solve any issues given a bit of time.

Well to start off, take a look at these 15 signs that you need to improve your digital marketing.

1. You don’t follow a documented marketing strategy.

Do you adapt your marketing according to what seems most appropriate at the time? If that is the case, you’ll have much to gain from taking a step back and elaborating a quarterly or annual plan, establishing a series of regular control checks to see if you’re meeting your goals. I promise it will make you much more effective.

2. It has been a while since you’ve taken a look at your website’s analytics.

It’s not enough to have a good plan – you need to check if your plan is actually working. In the digital marketing world, information is power, and that information lies in your website and social media analytics. Revise them regularly and change your strategy if necessary.

3. You think email marketing is going out of fashion.

Wrong! Emails continue to be one of the most effective online marketing techniques. What is going out of fashion is sending mass emails that are visually unfriendly and non-personalized. Use marketing automation in your email marketing strategy and dare to be creative!

4. You have not yet discovered inbound marketing.

If you think banners are the only way to advertise yourself online, inbound marketing will come as a pleasant surprise. In this strategy, rather than going and “hunting” your potential clients, they will be the ones coming to you.

5. Your content isn’t as interesting as it could be.

Did you know that most of the content published online has little to no traffic? According to Moz, 75% of content doesn’t have a single link pointing to it and 50% has 2 interactions or less on Facebook. If you want to be heard. You will have to dedicate the necessary time and resources to creating high-quality content.

6. You only use social media to promote your blog.

Brand profiles on social media can give your digital marketing a big push, but only if you know how to make the most of them. It’s not about promoting your own content at all cost, but rather about joining in on the debate and interacting with users in a natural way.

7. You use your company’s social profiles to publish photos of your dog.

Being authentic is great… but be sure not to go overboard! It’s great to show everyone that you’re human, but remember that your followers want to hear about your company, your products and, most of all, about themselves.

8. You don’t know why you’re on social media.

Far too many companies have corporate social profiles just for the sake of having them but have no clue what they want to communicate with them. Don’t be one of them! Social media is a part of your strategy, so they should be as aligned with your brand’s goals as any other effort. Some of the most common uses of social media for companies is to promote their own content, create a community for their brand and manage customer service.

9. You don’t know who your buyer persona is.

The key to success in online marketing is knowing who your ideal client is and going after them. And in order to that, the first thing you have to do is to sit down with your team and define their profile: where they live, what they’re like, what they like and dislike, their hobbies and tastes, etc.

10. Your SEO isn’t working.

Search Engine optimisation is a long road, so, first of all, you need to give it time. But if you have spent the last 6 months paying attention to keywords, optimising on-page SEO, link building and other techniques and you still aren’t seeing any results, you may need to get some help from an expert.

11. Your company website does not come up as one of Google’s first results when you search for your company’s name.

In terms of SEO, this is one of the biggest signs that something is wrong. You need your potential clients to be able to find you quickly when they look for you, so if this is happening you need to fix it asap. Some tips to get you started: optimise your on-page SEO for your company’s name and products (in the titles, descriptions, headers,…), optimise your social profiles, get mentioned on other websites and revise your Google My Business profile.

12. All your competitors rank above you in Google.

Being first is not always realistic… but you need to at least be competitive. If you aren’t able to rank on the first page for the keywords that interest you, it might be time to invest in SEM.

13. You don’t publish content regularly.

You don’t need to update your blog every day, but you should do it at least 1 to 3 times a week. Like this, you will improve your position in search engine results and attract users with your news.

14. Your page has lots of traffic, but very few conversions.

It is easy to track how many people are visiting your website, and extremely motivating to watch this number grow. But in reality, visitors are useless if you aren’t able to convert them into clients. If you’re getting lots of traffic and few results, be sure to review the keywords you’re positioning for and your sources of traffic to analyse how you can optimise your page to increase conversion.

15. You do digital marketing “whenever you get a moment”.

Too many companies (especially small ones) make the mistake of not prioritising marketing and only spend time on it when they have some free time. You may even get some results like this, but you will never be able to reach your full potential. Set aside at least a few hours a week for your marketing and treat this commitment as seriously as you would your clients, and you’ll see how quickly you’ll be able to see the difference.

There are several reasons why you might want to block certain websites on your computer. Some websites could be spreading viruses, contain explicit content or even be trying to steal your personal data. While you may well be more than capable of avoiding these websites, but that doesn’t stand true for everyone who uses your device. In such cases, it might be best to block certain websites. There are different ways to go about blocking websites. You can choose to block websites only on specific browsers, the entire operating system, or indeed your network router. Here’s our guide on how to block websites.

On your computer

If you want to control access to websites on just one machine, then you can set up a block at the operating system level. This method for blocking websites is not too hard to configure and will work across browsers.

How to Block Websites On Windows Computers

One of the backbones of the Internet is the DNS system that translates easy to remember (and type) names such as www.google.com into equivalent IP addresses (8.8.8.8). While you use DNS servers to get to websites, your computer also has something called a HOSTS file which can have this information stored locally. This can be used to disable access to unwanted websites. We checked this method with both Windows 7 and Windows 8.

1. Make sure you have administrator access on your computer. Sign in to your PC using an administrator account and go to C:WindowsSystem32driversetc

2. Double-click the file named “hosts” and select Notepad from the list of programs to open the file. Click OK. The last two lines of your host’s file should read “# 127.0.0.1 localhost” and “# ::1 localhost”.

2a. In case you can’t edit the file, you’ll need to right-click the file labelled hosts and select Properties. Click the Security tab, select the administrator account and click Edit.

2b. In the pop-up, select the account again and check Full control. Click Apply > Yes. Now click OK in all pop-ups.

3. At the end of the file, you can add the addresses of websites to block. To do this, just add a line at the end of the file, with 127.0.0.1 and then the name of the site you want to block – this will redirect the site’s name to your local computer.

4. To block Google, for example, add “127.0.0.1 www.google.com” to the end of the file without the quote marks. You can block as many sites as you want this way, but remember you can only add one per line.

5. Repeat this step until you’ve added all websites you want to block.

6. Now close the host’s file and click Save. Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect and you’ll find that all those websites are now blocked.

How to Block Websites On Your Mac

Here’s how to block websites on OSX .

  1. 1. Make sure you have administrator access to your Mac. Now open Terminal. You can find it under /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
  2. 2. Type sudo nano /etc/hosts and press enter. Enter the user (login) password when prompted.
  3. 3. This will open the file /etc/hosts in a text editor. Type the name of the website in a new line in this format “127.0.0.1 www.blockedwebsite.com” (minus the quotes). For each website you want to block, start a new line and type the same command with only the name of the website being replaced. When done, press ctrl+x and then Y to save changes.
  4. 4. Now key in the command sudo dscacheutil -flushcache and press Enter or restart your machine to make sure the websites are blocked.

How to Block Websites At Browser Level

Blocking a website on any browser is the easiest way to get the job done.

On Firefox, you can install an add-on called BlockSite to block a website.

  1. Install the addon, press ctrl+shift+a, and click Extensions on the left. Now click Options under BlockSite. In the pop-up, click Add and type the name of the website you want to be blocked. Repeat the process for all websites you don’t want to access. Click OK.
  2. Now, these websites will be blocked on Firefox. You can also set a password in BlockSite to prevent others from editing the list of blocked websites. This can be done via the options menu described in the previous step.

BlockSite is also available on Google Chrome.

Internet Explorer lets you block websites easily. Here’s how.

  • Open the browser and go to Tools (alt+x) > Internet Options. Now click the security tab and then click the red Restricted sites icon. Click the Sites button below the icon.
  • Now in the pop-up, manually type the websites you want to block one-by-one. Click Add after typing the name of each site. When done, click Close and click OK in all other windows. Now, these websites will be blocked in Internet Explorer.

On your phone or tablet

How to Block Websites On Your iPhone and iPad

Apple has some handy parental control tools that let you block certain websites. Here’s how.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Restrictions.
  2. Tap on Enable Restrictions. Now set a passcode for restrictions. This should ideally be different from the passcode you use to unlock the phone.
  3. After the passcode is set, scroll down and tap Websites. Here you can either choose to limit adult content or allow access to specific websites only.
  4. In specific websites only, there’s a short list of allowed websites including Discovery Kids and Disney, but you can also add sites by tapping on Add a Website.
  5. If you tap Limit adult content, Apple blocks websites that are deemed objectionable, but you can whitelist websites by tapping on Add a Website under Always Allow, or blacklist them by tapping on it under Never Allow.
  6. If you try to access a blocked website, you see a message telling you it is restricted. Tap the Allow Website and key in the Restrictions passcode to open that website.

How to Block Websites On Your Android Phone

On Android, you’ll need to edit the host’s file on your device to redirect sites you want to block. You’ll need a file manager, and a text editor – the easiest option is to use our favourite app ES File Explorer, which lets you do both things. Here’s how it works.

  1. Install ES File Explorer Open ES File Explorer and tap the “/” button at the top. Tap on system > etc.
  2. In this folder, you’ll see the hosts file – tap it and in the pop-up menu, tap text. In the next pop up, tap ES Note Editor.
  3. Tap the three dots button in the top right, and tap edit.
  4. Now, you’re editing the file, and to block sites, you want to redirect their DNS. To do this, just start a new line, and type “127.0.0.1 www.blockedwebsite.com” (without the quotes, where blocked website is the name of the site you’re blocking) for each website you want to block. For example, you’ll have to type 127.0.0.1 www.google.com to block Google.
  5. Reboot your Android device.

If that method is too complex for you, you can install an anti-virus app such as Trend Micro that lets you block websites.

  1. Install the app and run it. Go to Options > Safe surfing.
  2. Now swipe to Parental Controls and click “set up account”. Create an account and you’ll see an option called Blocked List in the app. Tap it, and tap Add. Now add the websites you want to block one at a time. Once that is done, you won’t be able to access these websites on your Android smartphone.

How to Block Websites On Windows Phone

You can’t do a full block of websites on Windows Phone, buy you can download the AVG Family Safety browser. By default, it blocks websites with malicious or explicit content, and if you purchase an AVG anti-virus licence and create an account, you can customise the list of blocked websites.

How to Block Websites On Your Network

If you have a Wi-Fi network in the house, then it is easier to just set up a block on unwanted websites via your Wi-Fi router. Most routers don’t have very user-friendly interfaces, so this can be a little daunting, and of course, the steps can vary for each router, but the basic process you follow is pretty similar, so if you’re just a little patient, this is actually pretty easy.

Changing the wrong setting could accidentally de-activate your connection, so if you get stuck, call your ISP right away.

  1. We tried this on a Beetel 450TC1 router provided by MTNL in Delhi, and with a Binatone Router provided by Airtel. The steps were exactly the same for both. To start, you need to go to your router’s settings. Open any browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. Press Enter. Some routers use a different address, so if this doesn’t work, check and see if it is mentioned in the documentation from your ISP.
  2. Now you will have to enter a username and password. This would have been set up during the installation of your connection – defaults are usually username: admin, and password: password. If not, check with your ISP and get the correct username and password.
  3. As mentioned earlier, the interface can differ. In our MTNL router, we found that we could block websites under Access Management > Filter.
  4. Here there’s a drop-down menu called Filter type selection. We selected URL Filter and typed the website we wanted to block in the URL field below. Above this field, there is an option called Active. Here we saw two buttons, Yes and No. We selected Yes and hit Save. This blocked the website on our network.
  5. You can create 16 lists of blocked websites, each containing 16 websites, using this method, letting you block up to 256 websites. Again, this will vary from router or router.

Recently, some images and renders of Apple’s long-rumoured iPhone 8 (also likely to be called ‘iPhone Edition’) leaked online. And now, a concept video uploaded by a YouTube user has given a realistic look at what the final product may look like.

Uploaded by a user going by the name ‘ConceptsiPhone’, the video shows the supposed iPhone 8’s front panel. It appears completely filled by a bezel-less display, something that has been rumoured for quite a while. A dual rear camera setup (with LED flash) is also visible, arranged horizontally as is the case with iPhone 7 Plus.

For what it’s worth, the video hints that the smartphone may have a vertically aligned dual rear camera setup. This means that the smartphone will better recognise foreground and background. Which will be particularly useful when placed horizontally in a VR headset.

As is always the case, the video shows the alleged ‘iPhone Edition’ with a polished Black and White metal body. There is also the standard speaker grille and USB port at the bottom. As for the front-facing camera, it’s under the display. Interestingly, the speaker grilles are visible both on top and bottom sides, something that’s not likely to happen.

iPhone 8 Concept Video

No matter how enticing the concept ‘iPhone Edition’ looks in the video, we may have to wait a little extra to get our hands on it. Confirming recent reports that Apple will delay the launch of iPhone 8 (also tipped to be called ‘iPhone Edition’), noted KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple’s upcoming flagship will indeed be hitting the shelves late this year.

As mentioned in a report by 9to5Mac website, Kuo says that the new iPhone (rumoured to have an OLED display) will arrive sometime between October-November, instead of the usual August-September timeframe. The reason for the delay is said to be a shortage of supplies that Apple has custom-ordered for the new smartphone.

Amazon.com Inc wants to help you choose what to wear. The technology and retailing behemoth on Wednesday unveiled a voice-controlled camera, the Amazon Echo Look. Amazon also unveiled an app that recommends which of two outfits is best. This is done using fashion specialists’ advice and algorithms that check for the latest trends.

The new product underscores Amazon’s ambitions to be a top player in fashion and voice-powered computing.

Amazon is working to make its voice assistant Alexa, which competes with Apple’s Siri, an indispensable feature of people’s lives. From playing music to helping someone cook, and now to helping someone dress. The more commands it receives and data it processes improve Alexa’s understanding, making the service more useful.

Amazon’s new “Style Check” service

Users submit two full-length photos of their outfits, taken by the Echo Look, and they receive recommendations that become “smarter through your feedback and input from our team of experienced fashion specialists,” Amazon said on its website.

If Echo Look is successful, the service would not only give Amazon data on what outfits customers prefer, but it also would help shoppers equate Amazon with fashion – a lucrative market for online retailers.

Surging apparel sales are helping Amazon challenge Macy’s Inc as the dominant retailer in the category. Customers like to try on clothing in stores, however, an obstacle to future growth online.

The Echo Look “opens up a new realm of shopping experiences,” said Werner Goertz, a Gartner Inc analyst. It may one day herald the use of augmented reality in e-commerce so shoppers can “try things on visually before you make your buying decision.”

The Echo Look’s camera – the first in an Alexa device – has the potential to be used for home surveillance, video conferencing and various enterprise applications, he added.

The $199.99 Echo Look is not yet available to the general public. Amazon has sold an estimated 10 million or more Alexa devices and has had trouble keeping the original Echo device in stock, it has said.
